HOW TO WAKE UP AT 6 AM

And keep doing it after the first week · Updated 28 October 2026

Short answer: early mornings are won the night before. Fix a bedtime, put the alarm across the room, plan a first action that needs no thinking, and have a friend who expects your proof by 6:15. Willpower at 6 AM is the weakest tool you have, so don't rely on it.

Why the alarm keeps losing

At 6 AM your brain is very good at arguing. "Five more minutes" sounds reasonable, the bed is warm, and nothing is waiting for you. The fight was already lost at 1 AM, when you were still scrolling.

The setup

  1. Fix the bedtime first. Count back seven to eight hours. Phone charging outside the bed from that time, every night.
  2. Same wake-up time every day. Weekends included, at least for the first three weeks. Moving it back by 15 to 30 minutes every few days is easier than jumping straight to 6.
  3. The alarm across the room. You have to stand up to stop it. Most snoozing happens lying down.
  4. A first action with no decision. A glass of water, curtains open, shoes on. Something that starts the day before your brain starts negotiating.
  5. Proof for a friend by 6:15. A photo of the time on your phone with the window behind it, sent to someone who will notice if it doesn't come.

A message you can send today

"21 days of waking up at 6? We both send a photo of the clock by 6:15. Whoever misses buys breakfast. Starting Monday?"

Common questions

How do I stop snoozing my alarm?

Make stopping it require standing up, and have one thing waiting for you. Snoozing is easiest when the alarm is in reach and the morning is empty.

What time should I sleep to wake up at 6 AM?

Around 10 to 11 PM for most people. Waking up early is decided the night before.

How long until it gets easier?

Usually a couple of weeks at the same time every day. Inconsistent weekends are what keep it hard.
