HOW TO STOP SKIPPING THE GYM

For anyone whose bed keeps winning · Updated 3 October 2026

Short answer: go at the same time every day, set a minimum workout for bad days, get everything ready the night before, and have a friend expecting your check-in. Most skipped sessions are lost in the first ten minutes after you wake up, so that's where to remove the friction.

Five fixes

  1. Pick one time slot and keep it. "I'll go sometime today" turns into a decision you remake every day, and you'll lose some of those. "I go at 7 AM" doesn't need deciding. Morning or evening matters less than doing the same one.
  2. Set a minimum workout. On bad days the goal is to show up, not to have a great session. Agree with yourself that 20 minutes counts. Most days, once you're there, you'll do more.
  3. Remove the morning friction. Pack your bag, lay out your clothes and fill your bottle the night before. If you have to decide what to wear at 6:45 AM, the bed usually wins.
  4. Have someone expecting you. A friend who's waiting for your check-in makes skipping a little awkward, and that's often enough. It works best if they have a habit of their own you're checking too.
  5. Never miss twice. You'll miss a day eventually. The habit survives one miss; two in a row is how most people quit. If you're sick, say so instead of disappearing.

How long until it sticks?

Longer than a month for most people. A 2009 study at University College London found daily habits took 66 days on average to feel automatic, with a range of 18 to 254 days. The first weeks feel like effort for everyone. That's when a partner helps most.

Where Accountify fits

Accountify is a free Android app for doing this with a friend. For gym challenges, you check in with GPS when you arrive at your saved gym and add a photo, and your friend approves it. Every night at 11 PM the app settles up in coins: if you skipped, your coins go to them. Leave days cover sick days, and a Streak Repair can save one broken streak.

Common questions

Morning or evening?

Whichever you can keep. Consistency beats the "best" time.

What if I'm too tired after work?

Go before work if you can, or go straight from work without stopping at home. Home is where most evening sessions die.

Does a gym buddy really help?

When they actually expect you, yes. The point isn't company; it's that someone notices when you don't show up.
